The Birth Story

Okay, so here's the whole story.  It's a long one, so prepare yourself.  =)  After going home after all that NST fun, I thought for sure I'd have to wait until the next Monday (the 17th) to start my induction (which was the plan if I didn't go into labor myself).  Keep in mind, at this point, I am still only dilated to a one, and 70% effaced, and hadn't changed in weeks.  It just wasn't going to happen.  Thursday morning, I woke up about six and my water had broken!  YAY!  Cory and I got to the hospital about 6:30 ish, and got all checked in.  They had to make sure that my water really broke (I promise, it wasn't much of a question, but they still have to check), and then they had to check to see how far I was dilated now.  I thought for sure that I would have progressed some since my water broke on it's own, but alas, I was still the same!  Ridiculous!  So they did one four hour dose of cytotec, and then we started the pitocin at about noon.  My contractions started quickly, strong, and one right after another.  Now, I didn't want to be the wuss girl who asked for the epidural 15 minutes in, so I told myself I had to last at least an hour.  Honestly, I didn't think I was going to make it the full hour!  I do not understand how people can do it unmedicated.  Props to them. It didn't help that the little one was face up (they are supposed to be face down), so I had a lot of back labor too.  Right at the hour mark, I called out for the epidural man.  It took another half hour or so for him to get there and get the epidural placed, but after that, I was a happy camper!  He was totally my favorite person of the day.  I was even able to sleep for a couple hours.  And the epidural was so not that bad.  I mean, I wouldn't want to do it everyday, but it wasn't a big deal at all.  After that, we just had to wait.  And wait some more.  And some more.  I dilated about one cm per hour all the way up to the end.  That's a long time to wait!  We watched a lot of Discovery Channel.  About midnight, we started the "rest and descend" part, which is giving the baby time to move down after you are fully dilated.  He was still face up, so they wanted me to try a few things to encourage him to roll over.  They had me lay on my side, almost on my tummy, and cross my leg over, which apparently helps.  They told me I would do it on one side for twenty minutes then move to the other.  However, less that five minutes and two contractions in that position, and I knew it was time to push.  They checked again, and he had rolled over!  I pushed for just under an hour, and Milo was finally born at 1:48 am, a little less than 20 hours after the whole thing started.  Did a little recovering in the labor room, finally got to eat a little something, then moved upstairs.  Milo had to do a few things, the first bath, footprints, hep B vaccine, etc.  By the time we were all settled again, it was just after six in the morning again!  Took his time, but so worth the wait!
